  • Representing over 100,000 workers and over 3100 companies across Ontario, Landscape Ontario is  North America’s largest association of industry professionals.

    Today, demand for skilled workers in landscape and horticulture is higher than ever. Too few workers often means companies have to turn down work.

    So, Landscape Ontario created GROW Training for New Workers to increase the workforce by preparing new workers for in-demand jobs across the province. 

  • Here's what you need to know about GROW: 

    GROW is FREE.

    All training and support are fully-funded.

    GROW is an Employment Ontario program funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.That’s how we can offer GROW's professional training and support completely free of charge. 

    No Experience Required.

    GROW is designed for workers new to landscape and horticulture. That means there’s no previous experience required.

    You'll gain valuable experience as you learn in real-world conditions working with current industry professionals. With small class sizes, GROW's professional instructors can provide hands-on support when and where you need it.

    By combining professional training with Landscape Ontario’s powerful professional network, most program graduates start their careers right after graduation.

    Employers love to hire GROW graduates because GROW focuses on the skills and knowledge new workers need to become a positive part of their team right away.

  • GROW features a combination of online and on-site training featuring content from GROW and our external training partners. 

    Throughout your training, we’ll help you add your new skills and experience to your Professional Profile. Your profile allows industry employers to contact you directly about jobs in your area through Landscape Ontario’s official job board, Landscape.jobs.

    GROW is here to help every step of the way, from your job search to your first day and beyond! You'll learn in-demand skills and create a resource of information to help you throughout your career. After you complete your training your GROW Alumni Portal connects you to even more resources and opportunities.

    New for 2024/25: GROW Boot Camps

    In response to workforce demand, GROW Boot Camps feature a single week of on-site training focusing on in-demand seasonal job skills, allowing you to get working sooner. 

    Winter GROW Boot Camps include the new Snow & Ice Management Level I certification. 

    When you participate in a GROW Boot Camp you'll receive the same high-quality skills and safety training GROW is known for in an easy-to-use online format. You'll also have access to additional GROW workshops to build your skills even after you've started working.

  • Your GROW training is divided into three steps to help you maximize your time and access the tools and support you need to succeed.


    Step 1: Online Training 

    Your online training features Self-Study Training and Live Online Training. 

    Self-Study Training:

    Your Self-Study Training allows you to start training from the comfort of your own home as soon as you’re accepted into the program. Each module features on-demand content so you can train at your own pace and according to your schedule. 

    At the end of each module, you’ll be required to complete a short quiz, called a Knowledge Check. Each quiz is designed to help you measure your understanding of the material. At the end of each quiz, you’ll also be able to provide your feedback on the module and request further assistance from one of your instructors.  

    Live Online Training

    When you’ve completed your Self-Study requirements, you’ll be invited to join one of our GROW virtual classes. Together, you'll take part in a series of interactive webinars hosted by a GROW instructors and current industry professionals. As in your Self-Study, modules will include Knowledge Checks and activities. 

    Your instructors will introduce the skills and techniques you'll practice during your on-site training. You'll learn to develop safe, consistent and effective practices that help you elevate your skills throughout your career. 

    Your Live Online Training also includes a variety of special online events featuring special guest speakers from across the indusrty.  Available exclusively to GROW participants and recent alumni, these interactive webinars offer you the opportunity to connect current industry professionals and recent graduates.

    Step 2: On-site Training

    GROW offers on-site training from locations throughout the province. During your online training, we’ll contact you to confirm your spot at a location near you.

    Working in small groups, you’re instructors will teach you professional techniques in real-world conditions. You’ll also learn how to use and care for common industry tools and equipment.

    At this stage, you’ll also begin work to earn your First Aid, CPR and WHMIS certifications, which are included in your GROW training at no cost.

    Step 3: Start your Career

    GROW Gets you working. Demand is high for skilled workers in landscape and horticulture. Your GROW training is specifically designed to prepare you for these in-demand jobs.

    Throughout your training, you'll explore opportunities in your area and connect directly with employers. As a result, many participants secure a job offer during training and start work in the industry as soon as they graduate.

    At every stage, GROW is there to help you build your career with exclusive resources and individual support.

  • During your on-site training, you'll gain valuable hands-on experience working in real-world conditions. Instructors will help you learn the safest and most effective way to use some of the industry's most common tools and equipment.

    But remember, The GROW Program is designed for workers new to landscape and horticulture. That means there's no experience required. Instructors will work with you to build your confidence and your skills to safely operate these tools on the job site when you graduate. You’ll be surprised of what you can accomplish!

     

    Transportation

    Many landscape and horticulture careers involve working from various job sites. Job-site transportation depends on the employer and the area where you work. In the question below, please tell us more about your access to transportation.

  • Training Commute

    Your GROW training includes in-person training from designated locations around the province. Available exclusively to GROW training participants, these opportunities range from 3-10 days depending on the subject and format.  

    GROW in-person training is available in a variety of formats including skills boot camps where participants learn in-demand skills or gain specific certifications like Level 1 & 2 Snow and Ice Management. 

    Please tell us about your ability and willingness to travel for these training sessions.

    Many participants are willing to travel a longer distance because it's only for a short period of time.

    Reflect on your access to transportation and availability and decide what is the longest you'd be willing to travel each day for training.  

  • Getting to your On-site Training

    Access to public transit varies by training location. 

    GROW may provide shuttle service to and from a designated location. Shuttles are allocated based on need and are not available for all training dates and locations. 

    GROW staff can provide additional information about shuttle availability in your intake interview.

    Calculating the distance and travel time of your daily commute is important before starting any job. You need to consider any factors that may affect your actual travel time (weather conditions, traffic congestion, public transit, construction). 

    As landscape and horticulture professionals, you'll also need to consider factors like the size and location of the company's service area, travel between job sites, and the type of work you'll be doing each day.  

    Reflect on these factors and decide what is the longest you'd be willing to travel each day for work.

Exposure to the elements varies job to job and sector to sector. That's why it's important to reflect on how you feel about the environmental factors you may face.

  • Many of the health benefits associated with landscape and horticulture careers are connected to the average level of daily activity. Although the level of activity varies, working in landscape and horticulture is more active than most careers. On average, landscape and horticulture professionals take 20,000 - 30,000 steps each day.  

    This type of activity can take some getting used to. While your on-site training will help you prepare for your new active career, it may still take some getting used to. It's important to listen to your body and observe all safety advice. When you do, you'll grow your strength and your endurance.

    But you may be more active than you think!
